Wheatley led the Wolverines to a 38–31 victory over Washington in the 1993 Rose Bowl Game. He ran for 235 yards on just 15 carries (a per-carry average of 15.7 yards), scored 3 touchdowns and was named the Rose Bowl Game Player of the Game.

Wheatley went on to play 10 seasons in the National Football League after being selected 17th overall by the New York Giants in the 1995 draft. He played in New York through the 1998 season, then joined the Oakland Raiders. Wheatley played with the Raiders from 1999 to 2004. He ran for a career-best 1,046 yards in 2000 and played in Super Bowl XXXVII in the 2002 season.

During his pro career, Wheatley amassed 6,549 combined net yards (rushing, receiving, and returns). Following his playing career, he was a successful coach at the professional, collegiate and high school levels. In 2015, he joined his alma mater as running backs coach, and in 2017, he was hired with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their running backs coach. In 2019, Wheatley was named head coach of the Morgan State Bears football team.
