During his three years with the University of Southern California, Sam “Bam” Cunningham became the university’s greatest rushing fullback with 1,579 yards. In the 1973 Rose Bowl Game, he led the Trojans to a national championship-clinching, 42–17 victory over Ohio State. Cunningham scored four times on his patented goal line dives and was named Rose Bowl Player of the Game. Cunningham went on to play for the NFL’s New England Patriots, where he became the greatest rusher in franchise history during his eight seasons. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the New England Patriots Hall of Fame in 2010. Cunningham died in 2021.
