During his 13 years (1918–1930) as head coach at Notre Dame, Knute K. Rockne led the Fighting Irish to national prominence and a 105–12–5 record. His .881 winning percentage tops the lists for both college and professional football coaches. Rockne’s teams earned three national championships and had five undefeated seasons. In 1925, under Rockne’s leadership, Notre Dame won the national championship and defeated Stanford 27–10 in the Rose Bowl Game—the school’s first post-season bowl game appearance.
A member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Rockne was also a dedicated family man to his wife, Bonnie, and their four children. In 1931, at age 43, Rockne tragically passed away in a plane crash.
