1959 Rose Bowl Game
1994 Inductee

On January 1, 1959, Iowa halfback Bob Jeter set fire to the Rose Bowl Game record books, setting new marks for rushing yards and yards per carry. During the Hawkeyes’ 39–12 win over California, the team rushed for 441 yards. Jeter gained a Rose Bowl Game-record (since broken) 194 of those yards on only nine carries for an average of 21.6 yards per carry. His record-setting performance earned him Player of the Game honors. Jeter’s Rose Bowl Game performance was the closing note on a great career. In all, he netted 469 yards for a 7.2 yards-per-carry average.

Jeter went on to an 11-year career in the NFL as a cornerback with Green Bay. He had 26 career interceptions and played for the Packers’ NFL champions in 1965, 1966, and 1967. (The latter two teams also won Super Bowls I and II.) Jeter died in 2008.
