C.A. Huntington, called “Shy” for his ability to get away from his opponents, is one of only nine men to both play for and coach the same university in the Rose Bowl Game.

Shy quarterbacked Oregon to a 14–0 upset over Pennsylvania in the 1917 Rose Bowl Game—a significant victory for a West Coast team against a dominating powerhouse from the East. In the game, he threw a touchdown pass and intercepted three passes on defense.

In 1920, Shy returned to Pasadena as Oregon’s head coach. Although he and his team
lost to Harvard 7–6, Shy's coaching record illustrated success (26-16-6). Shy Huntington died in 1973.
