Jim Owens is the coach who is credited with orchestrating a football renaissance at the University of Washington and setting a precedent for West Coast football supremacy.
During his 18-year tenure beginning in 1957, Owens led his teams to more victories (99) than any other Huskies’ head coach before him. In just his third season at the helm, he guided his team to its first conference crown and Rose Bowl Game win in 23 years, as Washington upset Wisconsin 44–8 on New Year’s Day, 1960.
Owens brought Washington back to Pasadena twice more: The Huskies beat Minnesota 17–7 in the 1961 Rose Bowl Game, and lost 17–7 to Illinois in 1964. Owens died in 2009.
