Russell Stein was the captain on Washington & Jefferson’s 1921 undefeated football team, which battled California to the only scoreless tie in the history of the Rose Bowl Game in 1922. He was one of the 11 men who played the entire game for Washington & Jefferson, which limited the Golden Bears to only 49 yards rushing, two first downs and
no pass completions. Stein was named Player of the Game.
Stein was selected to Walter Camp’s All-America team in 1921. He joined his younger brother Herb as the first brothers to be named All-Americans in the same year. Russell Stein was inducted into the Washington & Jefferson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999. He died in 1970.
