1965 Rose Bowl Game
2002 Inductee
In Michigan’s 34–7 romp over Oregon State in the 1965 Rose Bowl Game, Mel Anthony scored three touchdowns, including one on an 84-yard run (a record long that has since been surpassed only twice: by another Wolverines’ tailback, Tyrone Wheatley, in 1993 with an 88-yard touchdown scamper; and in 2012 by Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas, with a 91-yard touchdown burst).
In the third quarter, Anthony recovered a blocked punt and went on to score his second touchdown on a one-yard run. He ran seven yards for his third touchdown, ending the game with 123 yards on just 13 carries.
Anthony was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, but never played in the NFL. He played two seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Beavers, winning a championship with the Tiger-Cats in 1965.
