Chuck Ortmann led Michigan to a 14–6 victory over California in the 1951 Rose Bowl Game. Ortmann was 15-of-19 passing for 146 yards, including six completions for 80 yards in the pivotal fourth quarter, and was named Player of the Game.

In his three years as a starter at Michigan, Ortmann passed for 2,078 yards and ran for 676 yards on 273 carries. He was also a starter as a sophomore for the Wolverines’ undefeated 1948 team that won the national championship.

He was inducted into the Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2004 and played in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Texans. Ortmann passed away in 2018.
