Known for his long touchdown runs, this Northwestern University halfback set a then-Rose Bowl Game record when he ran 73 yards for a score while leading the Wildcats to a 20–14 victory over California in the 1949 Rose Bowl Game. Aschenbrenner carried the ball 11 times, gained 119 yards and earned player of the game honors. “Asch” graduated from Northwestern in 1949 with a degree in business administration.

Aschenbrenner played professional football in 1949 for the Chicago Hornets of the All-America Football Conference and in 1951 for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He died in 2012.
