1926 and 1927 Rose Bowl Games
2000 Inductee
The 1926 Rose Bowl Game is still considered one of The Granddaddy’s finest. Many speculated that Washington, led by All-America halfback George Wilson, would pound the team from Tuscaloosa. But it was the consistent pounding by the Tide in the third quarter, guided by quarterback Pooley Hubert and halfback Johnny Mack Brown, that secured Alabama’s 20–19 victory.
After trailing 12–0 at halftime, Alabama scored three touchdowns in a seven-minute span of the third quarter to take a 20–12 lead. Brown scored the final two touchdowns on 59- and 30-yard receptions. The following season, Brown returned to the Rose Bowl Game as an assistant backfield coach for Alabama, which tied Stanford 7–7.
While in town for that game, Brown was asked to take a screen test for acting. The studios liked what they saw, and Brown launched a 40-year movie and television career. Brown appeared in more than 160 movies from 1927 to 1966. He passed away in 1974.
