1935 Rose Bowl Game
1993 Inductee
Once described as the “greatest triple-threat of all Alabama backs,” Howell may have been the most versatile athlete ever to play in a Rose Bowl Game. Howell put on a show during the 1935 Rose Bowl Game, when he rushed for 79 yards, threw for two touchdowns and 112 yards on 9 of 12 passing, and returned four kicks for 74 yards. For his performance, Howell was selected as Player of the Game.
After completing his eligibility, Howell played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers from 1935 to 1941. However, he played only a partial baseball season in 1937, because that same year he also played professional football for the Washington Redskins and helped that team win the NFL title. After finishing his playing days, Howell coached
at Arizona State and Idaho, compiling a 36–35–6 record. He died in 1971.
