Mark Messner, one of the leaders of the Michigan defense in the 1987 and 1989 Rose Bowl Games, has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2022.
Messner, the Wolverines' all-time leader in career sacks and tackles for loss, is one of just three players in Big Ten Conference history to be named first team all-conference in four consecutive years. He started all 49 games in his career and was named an All American in 1987 and 1988.
Michigan made a bowl game in all four of Messner's seasons in Ann Arbor, with wins in the 1986 Sugar Bowl, 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl and the 1989 Rose Bowl Game over USC, 22-14. His Wolverines lost the 1987 Rose Bowl to Arizona State, 22-15.
