Rose Bowl Game Rematch: The Most Played Rivalry, USC vs. Michigan

The 2024-25 college football season features 13 games that are rematches of past Rose Bowl Games. With conference realignment moving Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington to the Big Ten, many of the rematches are now regular season conference games.

In week four of the 2024 college football season, #11 USC visits #18 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., replaying the most played Rose Bowl Game matchup of all time.

The Trojans and Wolverines have faced each other 10 times all-time, with eight of those matchups in Pasadena, Calif., for The Granddaddy of Them All. USC has won six of the eight meetings, but five times the game was decided by one score or less.

The first meeting was on January 1, 1948, and Michigan dominated to the tune of a 49-0 win, matching the largest margin of victory in a Rose Bowl Game which was set by the Wolverines 46 years earlier at the first Rose Bowl Game in 1902 when they beat Stanford, 49-0.

It would be more than 20 years until the Trojans and Wolverines would meet again, but they made up for it by playing three times in Pasadena during the 1970's, all of which were won by USC.

The first of those meetings was a defensive struggle , in which the Trojans won, 10-3 on January 1, 1970. Los Angeles Times columnist Jim Murray said that, "For 55 minutes, it seemed a waste of time to blow up the football," and "…it was as atavistic as a fight in a tar pit between two woolly mammoths."

On New Year's Day in 1977, USC's defense was once again the story in a 14-6 win by the Trojans. Michigan entered the game with the nation's best offense, but USC held the Wolverines to 231 total yards. Heisman Trophy winner Charles White took over at running back in the game for the Trojans and ran for 114 yards and a touchdown to the lead USC to the victory.

The 1979 edition of the Rose Bowl Game between USC and Michigan is considered one of the most controversial games in the history of The Granddaddy of Them All. The Trojans won the game, 17-10, but the aforementioned Charles White scored on what is known as the "Phantom Touchdown". In the second quarter, just as White was about to enter the end zone, he was hit hard and lost the ball. Wolverines linebacker Jerry Meter came up with an apparent fumble recovery on the 1-yard line. However, the line judge determined that White had crossed the goal line before losing control of the ball and signaled a touchdown. That score proved to be the difference in the outcome.

These two teams didn't meet for another decade, but they doubled-down by playing in the 1989 and 1990 Rose Bowl Games.
In 1989, Michigan finally got revenge for their three losses to the Trojans in the seventies. The Wolverines trailed 14-3 at halftime, but rallied to outscore USC 19-0 in the second half to win, 22-14. Fullback Leroy Hoard ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while the Michigan defense forced five turnovers to secure the victory.

The Trojans got their retribution in the 1990 Rose Bowl Game with a 17-10 win over the Wolverines. USC running back Ricky Ervins scored the game-winning touchdown with just 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The most recent Rose Bowl Game matchups between the Trojans and Wolverines came in 2004 and 2007.

In 2004, the Trojans led 21-0 late into the third quarter in a game that was not as close as the final score of 28-14 indicated. USC quarterback Matt Leinert threw three touchdown passes and caught another, while the Trojan defense tallied nine sacks.

The 2007 Rose Bowl Game started as a defensive battle, with a 3-3 tie at halftime. Michigan had held USC to 19 yards on 15 carries in the first half. But the Trojans flipped the script in the second half. On the next 30 plays, the Trojans threw 28 passes and used two quarterback sneaks for first downs. Of those 28 passes, USC quarterback John David Booty connected with his stellar receiving corps for four touchdowns, tying a Rose Bowl Game record. USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett was named Player of the Game as he hauled in 11 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns as the Trojans won 32-18.
