The 2024-25 college football season will feature 13 games that are rematches of past Rose Bowl Games. With conference realignment moving Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington to the Big Ten, many of the rematches are now regular season conference games.
Throughout the season, we will highlight these Rose Bowl Game (RBG) Rematches by looking at the history between the two teams, as well as digging into the matchup for this year.
The RBG Rematches feature several of the greatest Rose Bowl Games ever played, including the 1963 edition of The Granddaddy of Them All where #1 USC edged out #2 Wisconsin, 42-37, and the 2017 Rose Bowl Game, which was a last-second thriller as USC and Penn State battled back-and-forth throughout the entire game.
Also included in the RBG Rematches will be the most played New Years Day rivalry in history: Michigan vs. USC. The Wolverines and Trojans have met eight times in the Rose Bowl Game, with USC coming out on top six times.
October 12 will feature the most RBG Rematches in a single week with five. Penn State will play USC for the first time since the 2017 game and Ohio State will take on Oregon in what could be a #1 vs. #2 matchup. Other games include Notre Dame playing Stanford, Minnesota battling UCLA and Iowa taking on Washington.
Perhaps the most off-the-radar RBG Rematch will be on October 19 when Stanford plays Southern Methodist. These two teams met in the 1936 Rose Bowl Game and it is the only time they have played against one another.
Below is the entire list of RBG Rematches, by date of the rematch this season.
