Tournament of Roses - Rose Bowl Game

CFP Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential

The 111th Rose Bowl Game will be a College Football Playoff Quarterfinal

The 2025 Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential will be the 111th edition of The Granddaddy of Them All. The game, which will be played on January 1, 2025, at 2 p.m. PT., will serve as a College Football Playoff Quarterfinal and will feature a matchup of two of the top 12 teams in the country.

Throughout the College Football Playoff era, the Rose Bowl Game has served as one of six Playoff Semifinal sites. Previously, every third year, rather than hosting a traditional Big Ten vs. Pac-12 matchup, the Rose Bowl Game hosted two of the top four playoff teams, either No. 1 vs. No. 4 or No. 2 vs. No. 3. Now, under the new 12-team College Football Playoff format, the Rose Bowl Game will serve as a quarterfinal during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.

During the 2024-25 season, the Playoff Quarterfinals will be played at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential and Allstate Sugar Bowl. The Playoff Semifinals will be played at the Capital One Orange Bowl and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The CFP National Championship will be played on Monday, January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The 12-team Playoff will have a 5-7 format, meaning it will include the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive a first-round bye into the quarterfinals, while the remaining teams will be seeded No. 5 through No. 12 based on their final ranking and play a first-round game on the campus of the higher seeded team (The team seeded No. 5 will host No. 12; team No. 6 will host No. 11; team No. 7 will host No. 10; and team No. 8 will host No. 9.) There is no automatic qualification for any conference and there is no limit to the number of teams that can qualify from a single conference.

As a quarterfinal, the Rose Bowl Game will be assigned one of the top four teams in the country to play in Pasadena. That team is likely to have a regional or traditional tie to the Rose Bowl Game. The opponent will be determined by that first-round campus game in mid-December.

In the College Football Playoff era, the Rose Bowl Game has hosted four Playoff Semifinals. In 2015, the Rose Bowl Game hosted the very first Playoff Semifinal as No. 2 Oregon defeated No. 3 Florida State, 59-20, in the 101st Rose Bowl Game. The 2018 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game was the first Rose Bowl Game to feature overtime as No. 3 Georgia beat No. 2 Oklahoma, 54-48 in double overtime. The Rose Bowl Game hosted the 2021 Playoff Semifinal in Arlington, Texas, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the game to be moved from Pasadena. No. 1 Alabama triumphed in that game, defeating No. 4 Notre Dame, 31-14. Last year, No. 1 Michigan defeated No. 4 Alabama, 27-20 in overtime, in the 2024 Playoff Semifinal.
